• Compared with C-poor soils, C-rich soils presented higher CUE (0.47 vs. 0.28). • With the loss of SOC, both the bound OC and the molar ratio of OC to minerals decreased significantly. • The reactive mineral content was not the limiting condition for bound OC. • accumulation during soil cultivation. • Microbial outweighed reactive minerals in controlling soil carbon accumulation.
