• Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is increased in early-aged hearts. • Isoproterenol exposure impairs cardiac function in early-aged hearts, accompanied by further increases in ER stress and reduced mitochondrial function. • Chronic metformin feeding improves cardiac and mitochondrial function in early-aged hearts. • Chronic metformin treatment decreases ER stress and activates AMPK signaling in early-aged hearts.
