Methodology to characterize ply-tool friction of discontinuous fiber prepregs

Aligned discontinuous fiber prepregs are used in composite forming processes due to their ability to conform to complex geometries through high levels of in-plane stretching while maintaining mechanical properties comparable to continuous unidirectional prepregs. The discontinuous fiber prepreg investigated in this study, Tailored Universal Feedstock for Forming (TuFF), is produced by aligning chopped fibers using water flow and subsequently resin-impregnating dry aligned short fibers to form prepregs. To reduce defects and improve manufacturing efficiency during forming, numerical modeling is employed to predict TuFF’s deformation behavior. During forming, the prepreg sheet is displaced into a mold using a male tool or air pressure, with interface slip identified as a key deformation mechanism.
