• Degradation of Moso bamboo forests leads to a significant increase in soil MNC. • Shifts in bacterial life history are driven by soil acidification and lower litter C input. • MNC accumulation is facilitated by reduced bacterial diversity, shifted bacterial r-strategy and enhanced CUE.
