• Stress–strain response of glassy amorphous polymers shows important generic features. • Small strain response is accompanied by proliferation and redistribution of vf. • Large strain and unloading responses are mediated by slip and loss of entanglements. • Intermolecular interactions modulate both vf proliferation and entanglement network.
