Micropower Active Optical Position Sensor for Decimeter-Range Sensing Gaps

Abstract

Presented is a novel optical-encoder-inspired method for position sensing and its implementation in a prototype sensor device, targeting large sensing gaps and low power consumption. By utilizing simultaneous synchronous modulation in four infrared emitters with a single detector channel, a substantial reduction in ON-time for analog readout circuitry as well as in data acquisition and processing time has be achieved, enabling for up-to 2 years of AA-battery-pair lifetime. The device is capable of detecting linear sub-millimeter displacements at decimeter distances occurring at deliberately low pace, thus is ideal for monitoring structural integrity of buildings and constructions, or for general position or motion sensing over long periods of time.
