• The ZrO₂ nanoparticle and laser irradiation were used to improve the microstructure and wear resistance of the MAO coating. • The composite coating exhibited an enhancement in density, uniformity, thickness, and hardness. • The friction coefficient and wear rate of the obtained coating were decreased. • The synergistic impact mechanism of laser irradiation and ZrO₂ nanoparticles was revealed.
