• Microwave-assisted DES achieved rapid and sustainable LIB black mass recycling. • > 99% Co and Mn recovery and > 92% Li and Ni recovery achieved within 30 min. • Microwave-DES synergy enhanced solvent-solid interactions and leaching kinetics. • Ligand-assisted leaching mechanism revealed through chloride-lactate metal coordination. • Recyclable DES maintained high performance over multiple reuse cycles.
