• The application of AC catalysts increased the bio-oil yield from 23.26% to 35.58%. • AC modified catalysts enhanced the hydrogen content in the pyrolysis gas to 42.35%. • The content of phenolic compounds in the liquid product of 90AC10F reached 80.54%. • Fe/Ce-modified AC catalysts both exhibited enrichment properties for specific monophenols.
