• A new oxazolone polyamide metallopolymer was prepared for copper ion removal. • Fe(II) coordination improved structural organization and active binding sites. • Copper ion adsorption followed favorable monolayer adsorption behavior. • Spectroscopic analysis confirmed metal binding through oxygen and nitrogen sites. • Computational analysis supported the proposed coordination-based mechanism.
