• State-of-the-art strategies for AMD treatment and resource recovery are reviewed. • Waste-derived adsorbents remove Fe, Cu, Mn, As, F− and SO42− from AMD. • SRB bioprecipitation and bioleaching remove metallic ions and recover minerals. • Ozone and Fenton AOP remove >60% Co, Mn and organic pollutants from AMD. • Hybrid electrochemical and membrane systems enhance contaminant removal efficiency.
