• Mn-substituted ZnCo2O4 (ZMC) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. • Mn-substituted ZnCo2O4 (ZMC) displayed a uniform plate-like nanostructure. • The ZnMnCo2O4 (ZMC-5) electrode provided 791 F/g at 0.5 A/g. • A supercapacitor consisted of ZMC, TWAC (cathode), and PVA/Na2SO4 (electrolyte). • The ZMC-5/TWAC device provided an energy density of 62 Wh/kg @ power density of 2000 W/kg.
