• Novel Nb doping at the B-site of BaFeO3 cathode effectively lowers polarization resistance for SOFCs. • The optimized Nb-doped cathode achieves an ultra-low polarization resistanceand a high peak power density at 800 °C. • The enhanced performance can be understood from structural stabilization and increased oxygen vacancy concentration.
