• Maple leaf-derived saponin showed good efficiency in removing crude oil and petroleum product contamination from minerals. • The maple leaf-derived saponin removed 71-88% of hydrocarbons from calcium carbonate and silica in static tests. • Hydrocarbon contaminants were selectively separated from the minerals. • Asphaltenes removed from CaCO3 have higher polarity, lower aromaticity, and shorter chains. • The treatment restored 24.87-121.41% of the mineral's wettability.
