• Facet-specific humic acid (HA)-rutile interactions are quantified at nanoscale. • HA-rutile interaction is primarily driven by coordination, assisted by H-bonding. • The (001) facet exhibits the strongest complexation and H-bonding with HA. • HA's bidentate group exhibits markedly stronger affinity to rutile facets.
