• This study shows that affect regulation in depression is motivated. • Depressed individuals predominantly reported pro-hedonic goals. • They used emotion regulation strategies in the service of those desired end-states. • Accepting one’s situation and emotions helped boost mood in depression. • Distraction boosted mood only if aligned with the person’s desired end-states.
