Single-cell and spatial genomics reveal tissues as dynamic multicellular ecosystems rather than static cell catalogs. Multicellular ecosystems and interaction patterns provide an organizational framework, linking local cell–cell communication to tissue-level states. Multicellular ecosystems exhibit context-dependent changes in cellular composition and interactions across physiological and disease conditions. An ecosystem perspective enables translational strategies, including patient stratification based on multicellular states and therapies targeting cellular niches and interactions.
