• Multiscale dislocation model is developed to investigate the plastic behavior of polycrystalline materials. • Gradient polycrystalline grained materials exhibit the characteristic of gradient yield behavior. • A weighted effective grain size is developed for gradient grained materials to expand the application of Hall-Petch relation. • Numerical simulations reveal the plastic performance of gradient grained materials when subjected to thermal stress.
