This paper proposes a structural optimization approach for heterogeneous structures that combines macro-scale topology optimization with lattice-scale size optimization. The idea is to merge moving morphable bars (MMBs) with truss-based ground structures. Being different from homogenization or asymptotic global criteria methods, our approach directly maps material distributions onto discrete truss structures. As a result, computational complexity is greatly decreased, from millions of degrees of freedom (DOFs) in continuum-based formulations to only thousands of DOFs using a truss-based scheme. The key contribution of this work is a rigorous and consistent treatment of material overlap at connection nodes between heterogeneous elements. To ensure accurate material redistribution and maintain computational efficiency, the volume constraints are analytically computed with explicit consideration of material overlap. The present method optimizes both structural topology and element cross-sectional sizes simultaneously without imposing explicit local constraints. As a result, the underlying algorithm naturally filters optimal material distribution patterns across the entire structure. The high reliability of the present approach is demonstrated through several benchmark problems. The results show consistent performance improvements exceeding 30% in structural compliance compared to uniform design solutions. In addition, the method naturally accommodates high-porosity structural designs. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for additive manufacturing and biomimetic applications where hierarchical material distributions are desired. Overall, integrating the MMB model with truss-based topology optimization (TO) provides a computationally efficient framework for the design of complex heterogeneous structures across multiple scales.
