• Sown multispecies swards had lower abundance of plant-parasitic nematodes than the perennial ryegrass and permanent pasture. • Plant-parasitic nematode abundance was positively related to grass proportion and negatively to legume and forb proportion. • Soil food web trophic complexity as indicated by the Structure Index did not differ between the sown and pre-existing swards. • Organic and mineral N fertilizer treatments had comparable bacterial feeder abundance.
