• A bilayer PNIPAM/SA/MXene//P(AAM-co-AA) hydrogel was prepared by interfacial infiltration. • The hydrogel actuator showed extensive bidirectional bending for reversible actuation cycles. • A 10-mm PNIPAM/SA/MXene strip achieved sailboat motion by NIR light driven. • The self-sensing soft actuator perceived bionic activities by real-time electrical signals.
