Abstract

Abstract

This investigation focuses on the fabrication of nanosilver-treated cellulose cloth as a novel, flexible electrode for electrochemical sensing. Chitosan-reduced silver nanoparticles (SNPs) were functionalised with oxalic acid (oxalated SNPs). Plain (bare) SNPs and oxalated SNPs expressed the zeta potential values of 56.14 and − 43.15 mV, respectively, having z-average sizes of 68 and 105 nm. The band gap of plain SNPs reduced from 2.06 to 1.80 eV on functionalisation with oxalate moieties. The prepared nanofinish was applied to cellulose cloth via a pad-dry-cure approach. FTIR analysis verified successful esterification during oxalic acid treatment of cellulose cloth and confirmed the incorporation of chitosan-capped SNPs onto the cellulose cloth. SEM images of oxalated SNP-treated cloth confirmed a uniform dispersion of oxalated SNPs compared to the plain ones. Plain SNP- and oxalated SNP-treated cloths exhibited peak current densities of 71.85 and 191.16 µA/cm2, respectively, measured on a galvanostat. The treated SNP-cellulose additionally expressed multifunctional properties.
