Navigating disaster risk reduction research in Africa: challenges and opportunities for early-career scholars and the science-policy interface

Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate-induced hazards. Universities have the potential to contribute to disaster risk reduction (DRR) by effectively informing decision-making processes. However, a major challenge is the limited allocation of global research funds to African scholars researching this topic. To our knowledge, the existing literature has not adequately explored the opportunities available for these scholars to contribute to DRR policies and practices. This multi-country qualitative study draws on the perspectives of African scholars and practitioners to address an underexplored gap in the DRR science–policy literature. This study presents the challenges and opportunities in conducting localized, applied, and policy-relevant research in this field from the perspectives of African scholars and practitioners. We further examine the link between research, policy, and practice to identify the opportunities and pathways to bridge this knowledge gap. Key challenges include limited resources and capacities, lack of community engagement, safety concerns, collaboration difficulties between senior and early-career scholars, and issues related to knowledge dissemination and integrating science with policy. The findings highlight the importance of building strong partnerships, enhancing communication, and fostering trust among stakeholders to improve collaboration and leverage research outcomes to build more resilient communities in Africa..
