NaYF4:15Gd/20Eu@NaYF4 nanoscintillators with fast decay time for dynamic X-ray imaging

Lanthanide-doped fluoride nanoscintillators (NSs) hold great promise for X-ray imaging, yet achieving high scintillation intensity, negligible afterglow, and rapid decay remains a key challenge. In this study, NaYF4:15Gd/20Eu@NaYF4 core-shell NSs are employed for dynamic X-ray imaging. The incorporation of Gd3+ ions together with the core-shell design significantly enhances the X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) intensity. Under pulsed X-ray excitation, these NSs exhibit a decay lifetime of ∼21.3±0.6 μs, which is substantially shorter than that of commercial GOS:Tb (474.4±14 μs). An integrated thin film of the core-shell NSs achieves a high spatial resolution of 11.6 lp mm-1, demonstrating their potential as a nanoscale scintillator screen. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing XEOL performance and advancing real-time X-ray imaging technology.
