In the early 2000s, Japan was turning out groundbreaking humanoids that were showstopping in their abilities. Robots such as Geminoid HI-1, a mechanical twin of Osaka University professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, and Honda's Asimo, which demonstrated smooth, humanlike bipedal mobility, brought ideas from science fiction to the real world. But lacking practical applications, they were mostly expensive technology demonstrations that were eventually mothballed.
