• A NiFe/FeCoCH/NF heterostructure was designed by anchoring NiFe alloys on FeCoCH. • NiFe/FeCoCH/NF serves as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. • NiFe/FeCoCH/NF exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic efficiency for OER and HER. • Boosted activity stems from the synergistic coupling between NiFe alloys and FeCoCH.
