Abstract

• Avian studies in the 1970s concluded that the entire ENS is derived from neural crest • Mouse lineage studies implicate an ENS contribution from placodes and pancreas • Mouse studies also implicate progressive postnatal replacement of the ENS by mesoderm • This review assembles and reconciles (where possible) these old and new observations
