Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are highly suitable for medium- and high-voltage DC–AC applications due to their modularity, scalability, and low harmonic content. A key challenge in MMCs is submodule capacitor voltage balancing (CVB), which is critical for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation. Achieving CVB efficiently remains a significant research challenge. This article presents a novel CVB method for MMCs that does not require the arm current feedback signals. The proposed approach relies on the difference between the submodule capacitor voltage and the reference voltage, combined with a single proportional control loop per submodule, to achieve effective CVB. The proposed scheme yields reduced circulating currents as compared to existing methods. Additionally, an improved CVB scheme is introduced, which dynamically adjusts the controller gain to further suppress circulating currents. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed methods, showcasing their improved performance in terms of reduced circulating current magnitude and capacitor voltage ripple when compared with conventional CVB strategies.
