• Active enhancers existed in distinct maturation states, as reflected by the sequential and differential reductions of H3K4me1, H2A.Z and H3K27ac. • H2A.Z incorporated into chromatin after H3K4me1 modification and initiated H3K27ac modification that became stabilized later, suggesting a hit-and-stabilize model. • H2A.Z continued to incorporate into chromatin on each time of SMC transformation, thereby mediating continuous expansion of enhancer network in the plastic vascular SMCs.
