• A novel depressant HEDTA-3Na for pyrite under low alkalinity is proposed. • Factors affecting the flotation behavior of pyrite and galena were discussed. • The selective depression mechanism of HEDTA-3Na for pyrite was revealed. • HEDTA-3Na was successfully validated on high-sulfur lead ore under low-alkalinity conditions.
