• New mechanisms of merging, fluctuation, fragmentation, and the lifting effect are observed in stratified flow boiling. • Fluctuation and merging effects enhance stratified flow boiling heat transfer by 10.18–27.86 %. • The fragmentation effect causes local deterioration but is offset by positive effects. • Liquid lifting isolates the heating wall from liquid film and causes the deterioration of heat transfer.
