All patients had long-standing AF that persisted >1 year and severe MR, with no significant left ventricular remodelling (no left ventricular dilation). HFrecEF was defined as: (i) documentation of a decreased LVEF <40% at baseline, (ii)=10% absolute improvement in LVEF and (iii) a second measurement of LVEF =40%. Patients with a history of cardiac surgery and patients with MV disease secondary to rheumatic, degenerative, endocarditic, ischaemic, congenital heart or myocardial disease were excluded from the study.
