Recent evidence demonstrates the rapid consolidation of skills over seconds, termed micro-consolidation. Initial motor skill gains can occur online, during practice, or offline, during brief rest periods, with task demands influencing the relative online versus offline contribution. Micro-consolidation has been demonstrated across explicit, implicit, and statistical/probabilistic motor sequence learning, and it is robust to manipulations of rest versus practice intervals and interference. Neuroimaging evidence indicates that micro-consolidation is driven by hippocampal neural replay and beta-band activity across frontoparietal networks. Fatigue, attention, and reactive inhibition have been posited as possible confounds but do not fully account for the behavioural and neural data observed across studies.
