• Tempered bainitic steel exhibited anomalous strain hardening behavior at 300°C. • Fine ε-carbide precipitates from tempering were confirmed via in-situ TEM. • Simulations predicted further dynamic precipitation during in-situ deformation. • Post-mortem TEM of the fractured sample confirmed the dynamic precipitates. • The dual precipitation provides a simultaneous increase in strength and toughness.
