• Solar k-indexes are modeled using 3-component truncated skew-normal mixtures. • The mixture model is bounded, asymmetric, and physically interpretable. • Validation uses 1-min radiation data from 126 stations worldwide. • A novel radiation climate classification is proposed using fitted densities.
