Optical beam steering for space communications using Risley prisms

Abstract

The increasing demand for higher data rates and enhanced data security in satellite communications has driven a growing need for free-space optical communications (FSOC) technology. To handle the extreme pointing requirements of current laser optic systems, most current satellite subsystems rely on either high satellite pointing accuracy or complex mechatronics for beam steering. In this presentation, we will assess the performance of Risley prisms on mechanical rotation mounts for beam steering on nanosatellites and pico-satellites, which will enable satellite interlink at a significantly smaller size, weight, power, (SWaP) and cost than currently achievable. We will also present a framework for obtaining active feedback to extend this technology to satellite uplink and downlink.
