• Quantified the seasonal dynamics of sweet maize N uptake, N2O emissions, and NO3) leaching. • Heavy rainfall reduced sweet maize productivity and increased N2O emissions and NO3⁻ leaching. • Optimized management increased yield while reducing N2O emissions and NO3⁻ leaching in both rainy and dry seasons. • Agronomic management, plant N uptake, and soil properties jointly regulated yield and reactive N losses.
