Abstract

This paper presents two important extensions of the multiple variable cutting (M-VCUT) level set method for the topology optimization of cellular structures. First, because the macroscale shape of a cellular structure can be highly irregular and the microstructures need to be optimized in an unstructured cell mesh, a mapping technique is developed to map microstructure prototypes from a reference square cell to quadrilateral cells. Second, in order to make the geometric representation model more flexible so that complex structures can be properly described, high order cutting functions, for instance biquadratic and bicubic cutting functions, are employed to cut the basic level set functions. While the merits of VCUT and M-VCUT level set methods are inherited (i.e., naturally connected microstructure and enlarged design freedom), the proposed two extensions enable the optimization to be more flexible to deal with cellular structure with more complex geometry.
