• Geometric optimization of NaI(Tl) detectors for Compton suppression is systematically investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. • Peak and total Compton suppression factors (CSFpeak and CSFtotal) increase with plug length and annular thickness up to saturation limits. • Optimal plug radius (4.55–4.83 cm) yields maximum solid-angle coverage with marginal improvement beyond this range. • Suboptimal geometries reduce suppression performance by 20–60% and increase Compton continuum in 662 keV spectra. • Optimized configuration achieves >90% of maximum CSFpeak and CSFtotal while minimizing detector volume.
