• Subducting slabs deflect upwelling mantle plumes which can result in plume branches around the slab. • Plume branching caused by subducting slabs can sustain long-lived parallel volcanic chains. • Plume branching can explain the close spacing and geochemical similarity of the Tasmantid and Lord Howe hotspot chains in the Tasman Sea.
