The lineage Patescibacteriota represents a diverse and largely uncultivated bacterial phylum, predominantly reported in oligotrophic habitats but also found in nutrient-rich environments such as soil and the rhizosphere. Although typically present at low relative abundances, these bacteria are increasingly recognised for their important ecological roles, particularly via symbiotic and parasitic interactions that influence microbial community dynamics. Recent studies highlight their involvement in nutrient cycling, metal transformation, and their adaptive responses to environmental changes, such as microbial transplantation or contamination with heavy metals and plastics. Elevated relative abundances under these changed conditions suggest that Patescibacteriota may play critical roles in shaping microbial community structure and supporting adaptation processes, potentially through network dynamics and mutualistic relationships. This review explores the ecological significance of Patescibacteriota in soil and the rhizosphere, focusing on detection methods, relative abundances, inferred metabolic functions, and their potential plant-beneficial traits. By studying this diverse and enigmatic phylum, we can deepen our understanding of microbial diversity, symbiosis, and the intricate interactions between plants and microbes within the rhizosphere ecosystem.
