• Patrilocal residence reduces young married women’s autonomy in Sri Lanka, but less so than elsewhere in South Asia. • Patrilocal residence has detrimental consequences for young married women’s reproductive control in Sri Lanka. • Effects of patrilocal residence on these outcomes are stronger for less gender egalitarian contexts within Sri Lanka. • Effects of patrilocal residence on these outcomes are likely underestimated if living arrangements are assumed exogenous. • Results for patrilocal residence and physical spousal abuse are inconclusive and may be affected by sample selection.
