Per-Packet Partial Reliability at the Transport Layer for Multipath Networks

Multipath transport protocol is seen as a way to support multi-access connectivity, or simply deliver a higher data rate to the user, in beyond 5G services. How such multipath transport protocols can support real-time traffic while maintaining a degree of reliability is an interesting question, which this article attempts to address. We introduce dynamic reliability (DRel) as a mechanism to switch between reliable and unreliable data transmission in one transport session amongst multi-paths, depending on the dynamicity of wireless resources, such that the requirements of xURLLC are supported. Thorough examination shows a drastic reduction of scarce resource consumption in terms of session packet volume, up to 80%; alongside a moderate enhancement of xURLLC information timeliness.
