• Single actions contain meaningful internal structure; they are not indivisible units of event cognition. • Visual perception represents the event structure within single actions. • Transitions between an action’s internal steps transiently impair visual sensitivity to subtle changes. • Automatic perceptual segmentation at brief timescales draws on both semantic knowledge and visual cues.
