• SnS/SnS2 heterojunction synthesized for photo-assisted electrocatalytic HER. • SnS/SnS2 shows 208 mV overpotential for HER at 10 mA cm−2. • Photo-assisted HER reduces overpotential to 144.77 mV at 10 mA cm−2 by 63.23 mV. • Band alignment and optimized SnS fraction enhance photo-assisted HER activity.
