• Photocycloadditions in 3d, 4d, and 5d transition-metal complexes and their coordination frameworks are examined. • Late transition metals readily serve as structural templates, whereas early/middle metals mostly function as photocatalysts. • Solid-state reactivity changes across diverse coordination geometries and phase transitions are summarized. • SCSC transformations and diverse photomechanical behaviors in crystals are highlighted. • Future directions are outlined for fundamental photochemistry, material science, and robotics.
