• A leak-proof 3D interpenetrating photothermal hydrogel was fabricated. • High water uptake of 4.1 g/g was achieved with 92% cyclic retention. • 89.5% water release was completed in 70 min under 1.0 sun irradiation. • Moisture adsorption and power generation were combined in the hydrogel.
