• The 3D-PIV technique is utilized to characterize downburst-like wall-jet outflows. • Temporal and spatial evolution of main flow characteristics is investigated. • Limitations and advantages of the Wall of Wind’s wall-jet simulator are discussed. • Effects of the vertical wind speed component in downburst flow fields are non-negligible.
