• High nutrient levels promote plant diversity in sandy coastal shelterbelts under high salinity conditions through a resource buffering and compensation mechanism. • Stress-tolerant leaf traits, such as high length-to-width ratio, hairless, and linear shape, enable plant adaptation to nutrient-poor coastal sandy soils. • Species diversity enhances ecosystem stability in sandy coastal shelterbelts via interspecific complementarity, functional redundancy, and facilitated nutrient cycling.
