• PM2.5 accelerates and switches cigarette smoke-induced macrophagic inflammation to neutrophilic one. • Pro-inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress cause the CS+PM2.5-induced COPD pathogenesis. • Oleanolic acid reduces oxidative stress and brings protease-antiprotease balance to generate anti-inflammatory response. • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of oleanolic acid help in reversing lung damage marked by improved lung function.
